The Academy Awards aired last night on ABC. The Artist captured the top Academy Awards, including the Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director statuettes.
In the two screenwriting categories, the Descendants screenwriting trio (Alexander, Nat, and Jim) won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay whereas Woody Allen collected another Oscar for his Best Original Screenplay in Midnight in Paris.
Surprisingly enough, the Academy elected to pass over Brad Pitt yet again. The three time Academy Award nominated actor must look to another period piece to win his first Oscar. Brad previously got nominated for his brilliant performances in 12 Monkeys and in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
We notice the Academy gravitating toward movies about politics, England, Shakespeare, wars, and dramatic performances. Meryl Streep won her third Oscar depicting England's former prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. However, Rooney Mara's The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo's role proved to be a much better performance.
Last year, Colin Firth won Best Actor for The King's Speech. Even so, Helen Mirren won an Academy Award for performance in The Queen. Shakespeare in Love won several awards in the 1999 Academy Award spectacle. The Academy seem to cast their votes on period pieces with epic themes.
